Ten towns and cities in Portugal have been brightened up with the implementation of LED street lighting, while installation across a further 20 municipalities are expected to be completed in the next few months.
The UrbanLED luminaires use Luxeon Rebel power LEDs from Philips Lumileds, which the manufacturer claims will provide a combination of energy-efficiency, uniform light distribution and low maintenance and repair costs.
Additionally, the white light from the UrbanLED solutions lend a more attractive appearance to areas that were previously yellow-tinged under high-pressure sodium lamps.
"It's encouraging to see how many more local authorities in Portugal are also taking a long-term view and investing in state-of-the-art lighting," commented Luis Mota, director of lighting installer EnergiaViva.
"We see a complete national conversion to solid-state technology as a realistic goal over the next several years."
The Luxeon Rebel recently became the world's first power LED to be recognised by Underwriters Laboratories, simplifying the certification process.
