LED lighting firm Cree and the China Associate of Lighting Industry (CALI) have announced that the first Cree Cup – Creative LED Lighting Design Contest has been launched.
The competition, which takes place across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, is the first of its kind among university students and aims to cultivate innovation in the field of LED lighting design.
Around 1,000 students from more than 30 universities are expected to enter the contest, which will be organised by Cree, CALI, Shanghai Optoelectronics Trade Association and professors from various universities.
"LED lighting is an important element of China's energy-efficient future," commented Greg Merritt, Cree's vice-president of corporate marketing.
"This is part of our strategy to accelerate the adoption of LED lighting."
Cree recently announced an underwritten public offering of 11 million shares of its common stock, the proceeds from which it intends to use to cover capital expenditures in 2010.
