Pangolin Laser Systems has announced what it calls a major breakthrough for the lifespan of products that employ laser diodes.

A new component called LASORB has been developed by the company, which protects laser diodes and LEDs from electrostatic discharge (ESD) by absorbing the energy.

William Benner, president and chief technical officer of Pangolin, commented: "LASORB has applications across a wide array of consumer, commercial and industrial products.

"ESD is a well-known problem, especially Blu-ray and low-power single-mode red laser diodes."

LASORB also protects against reverse bias conditions and against power surges caused by switching equipment on and off.

Two series of the product are to be produced, with one optimised for red and infrared diodes and the other for Blu-ray diodes.

Established in 1986, Pangolin provides software and related systems to the laser display industry and has offices in the US, central Europe and mainland China.!http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&itemid=19380037|alt=ADNFCR-1785-ID-19380037-ADNFCR|src=http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&itemid=19380037!
