A project is currently underway to develop a network of sensors to automatically analyse the water at strategic points along rivers and lakes.
Whatever the weather, the sensors are designed to transmit data back to a computer at all hours of the day.
According to information from the Marine Institute which was seen by ScienceDaily, the study is taking place between Deploy project researchers at the National Centre for Sensor Research, the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, the commercial partner Intelligent Data Systems and the South Western River Basin District.
It aims to demonstrate the ability of sensor networks to collect real-time water quality samples.
The information which is gathered, interpreted and analysed constitutes an important stage in the validation of such a monitoring system.
In related news, Ashcroft recently announced the launch of miniature digital pressure sensors which it claims are perfect for refrigeration and air handling applications.
