It has been claimed that high demand for LEDs for backlit applications could lead to a shortage in supply.
According to TG Daily, there has been an increase in the number of LED backlit applications for notebooks and televisions.
As a result, LEDinside has predicted that there could be a shortage in the supply chain that could last until the first quarter of 2010.
The situation could be made worse by an ever-increasing demand for LED chips in smartphone applications, the news provider continues.
It adds: "The penetration of LED backlighting in notebooks has increased dramatically and LEDinside forecasts that the penetration into this market for calendar year 2009 is likely to reach 52 per cent."
Earlier this week, the BBC technology programme Click reported that although they are expensive, LED lightbulbs are an effective alternative to existing energy-efficient products.
The bulbs can last for as long as 19 years, which is 40 times longer than other solutions.
