The growth of LED technology and the increasing use of lights in new industries are bringing fresh challenges to the market, it has been claimed.
According to European Plastics News, Professor Georg Steinbichler, Engel's R and D manager, discussed injection moulding of automotive LED lenses at the Austrian injection moulding machinery maker's open house earlier this year.
Because of thick sections and extended cooling times, the moulding of optical lenses can pose some very specific challenges.
However, Mr Steinbichler noted that multilayer moulding and dynamic cooling can be used to reduce cycle times and improve optical performance through reduced internal stress.
He also discussed the combination of high pressure is combined with variothermal dynamic control to improve dimensional stability, the news provider reports.
Recently, TG Daily reported that there could soon be a shortage in the supply of LEDs as demand for the devices in backlit products is increasing.
