Advances in LED technology could mean that the bulbs become even more energy efficient.
This is according to Environmental Leader, which reports that the Florida Energy Systems Consortium is currently researching the possibility of developing a combined solar cell, LED and energy storage system.
A solar cell made from clear organic material, would be placed on top of an organic LED and during the day, the bulb would project light on to a platform containing lithium batteries.
This means that it can collect energy when the sun shines, as well as produce light when it gets dark, the news provider explains.
The idea is also more cost-effective, as it eliminates the need for an inverter.
Last week it was reported that coffee chain Starbucks is to install LED lights in 8,000 of its outlets as part of a drive to become more environmentally-friendly.
It is hoped that this will reduce energy consumption in the stores by seven per cent.
