Sunovia Energy Technologies has been awarded a contract to provide LED street lights in Sarasota County.
The company will produce 148 EvoLucia-brand 120W LED cobra head-style street lights for the agreement, after it offered the "lowest price responsive bid" for the project.
It is thought that the new lights could save the region around $14,000 (£8,410) a year in energy and maintenance costs, as they are very energy efficient and will require no attention for 12 years once installed.
They can also reduce carbon emissions, thus being kinder to the environment than the previous lights.
Sunovia Energy Technologies said because the LEDs within the EvoLucia lights are "strategically aimed to focus light on specified locations, they achieve higher light utilisation and provide higher target efficiencies than even other types of LED fixtures".
In related news, new research conducted by DisplaySearch has revealed that LEDs will become the dominant form of backlighting in products such as TVs and notebooks by 2015.
