Gartner has stressed that more action needs to take place if advanced technology is going to help the world tackle climate change effectively.
Simon Mingay, research vice-president at the company, made his comments following a statement by secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union Dr Hamadoun Toure, who said that technology could be used to dramatically reduce emissions in several industries.
He explained that this message has been heard many times before, but yet no real progress has been made.
Mr Mingay stressed that it is a "great" idea which needs to be acted on, otherwise it is simply repetition of the same content.
"The communication around it has improved. There's definitely better communication about it from the ICT industry as a whole, but it's not really moving on and that's a shame," he remarked.
For instance, there are many references to the Smart 2020 report put together by the Climate Group, but this was published two years ago, added Mr Mingay.
