An industry commentator has claimed that several companies are planning to bring out new LED lighting products in the new year.
Writing for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sandy Bauers stated that many businesses are "reconfiguring" their lighting aisles to make way for these items.
She noted that LED bulbs for consumer use were previously relatively expensive and offered a dim and bluish light, so, despite the energy-saving benefits, the take-up in homes did not match expectations.
However, in her view, this could change as a result of prices "plummeting" in the sector.
Kevin Dowling, a representative from bulb manufacturer Philips Electronics, told Ms Bauers: "You're going to see an explosion of products and applications. What we're seeing in 2010 is a new age of light."
In the same publication, Charles Szoradi predicted that it might take three years for the general public to switch to LED lighting, with his estimate based on the amount of time that it took people to switch from vinyl records to CDs.
