A research firm has suggested that the popularity of VoIP is beginning to mature and see more companies offer their services on mobile handsets.
Diane Myers, directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research, made her comments following the news that Truphone has released its Local Anywhere product, which allows people to save money on conventional and video calls on their mobile.
She noted this sort of service is becoming more common, with applications such as Skype, Google Voice and a recent development from France Telecom taking increasing shares of the market from traditional phone line operators.
Ms Myers remarked: "The VoIP market has definitely matured and has become a highly reliable service in most deployments, particularly in fixed-line communications."
However, the mobile side of VoIP is just beginning to develop, with many companies coming out with "innovative offerings", she continued.
An example of how popular such services have become is that one-third of all Skype-to-Skype calls are now on video, concluded Ms Myers.
