A new lighting system for an Australian submarine is set to be designed by Oxley Developments and consist of high-specification LED bulbs, the company has announced.
The Royal Australian Navy Collins Class submarine currently uses fluorescent lamps, but an LED system is set to be in place in early 2011.
Oxley has been chosen to design and develop the devices, some of which will need to be dimmable and explosion-proof, as well as be able to offer sufficient light for officers to carry out everyday tasks in various parts of the vessel, including the weapons area and living quarters.
The contract was awarded to the manufacturing firm by ASC Pty with the intention of reducing the cost of lighting the submarine and taking advantage of the long life of LEDs, since spare bulbs will not be required on board.
Recently, Oxley revealed that it has added a series of bipolar LEDs to the range of energy-saving lighting solutions that it already produces.
