Alaskan city chooses to install LED street lights

The Alaskan city of Valdez has announced that it will be revamping its street lights by installing LEDs as part of the Cree LED City scheme.

Mayor of the town Bert Cottle revealed that citizens have been impressed with the quality of the new lights as well as the colour of the beams.

The area will now see all 343 of its street lights converted to the new energy-saving bulbs being provided by LED manufacturer Cree.

With the cost of energy potentially rising in the future, the idea of using low-power technology such as this becomes more attractive, added Mayor Cottle.

He explained: "We project we can achieve 45 per cent or higher energy savings with the new BetaLED fixtures we are installing, compared with the high-pressure sodium lights we are replacing."

Last week, Cree revealed that its new XLamp MPL EasyWhite virtually eliminates the need for clients to understand LED bins, as it offers a simpler colour temperature system.ADNFCR-1785-ID-19605146-ADNFCR

    Mr. Cottle,

LED Traffic lights in "Alaska"? Seen no mention in article in regards to an added heating element to maintain signals visibility. I appreciate the conservation concept but not at the cost of public safety; I see this as a short sighted false solution with 343 opportunities for disaster waiting to happen.
