A group of people near Billings in the US have been encouraging the use of LED lighting on the city's roads.
According to KULR-8, many traffic fixtures in the area already make use of the environmentally friendly devices.
However, advocates of the bulbs have now launched a petition to ask the Public Service Commission to consider further use of the lights.
Vern Klingman, who is part of the group, explained that LEDs would reduce the amount of energy used at night by as much as 50 per cent.
"If we can do all of those things and save money and make it so it's to everybody's advantage, it's good stewardship of our responsibility," he said.
Mr Klingman added that they would also improve visibility and safety.
Last week, RAB Lighting revealed that it has launched a new affordable LED device that is suitable for outdoor use.
The LPACK 20 has a 50,000-hour lifespan and is cheaper than many similar products on the market, the manufacturers claim.
