One expert has pointed out that although LEDs may be an expensive option for backlighting in consumer TVs, many people seem happy to pay for them.
Discussing the matter during a special presentation at the APEC Conference, Gartner research director Steve Ohr said that in his opinion, the devices could have a 50 per cent market penetration by 2013.
However, he also questioned whether edge-lit sets actually offer any improvement in image quality when compared to traditional fluorescent-lit TVs, LEDs Magazine reports.
Despite these queries, he thinks that all the signs point to a fairly rapid adoption of LEDs.
"Promotion of LED backlights may result in high consumer acceptance despite the higher price," Mr Ohr concluded.
Meanwhile, Bob Steele, director of optoelectronics at Strategies Unlimited, recently stated at the Strategies in Light event that the next five years will prove to be very positive for the high-brightness LED component segment.
