New research has revealed that LED streetlights have considerable benefits over traditional lamps.
Conducted by the University of Pittsburgh, the study revealed that although the newer devices are more expensive than their high-pressure sodium alternatives, they have many advantages.
For example, their lifespan means that they offer the correct balance between affordability, brightness and energy and environmental consumption.
This means that although the initial cost of the bulbs may be more, they are actually more efficient from production to disposal.
The authors of the study also pointed out that LED technology has more scope for improvement and development in the future, which means that the devices could become even more environmentally friendly.
Last month, the residents of Billing in the US launched a petition in an attempt to encourage the Public Service Commission to make better use of LEDs in the area's streetlights.
KULR-8 reported that the advocates think the devices will improve safety and visibility on the roads.
