One of the world's foremost electronics companies has created an LED light bulb that owes its looks to something more traditional.
General Electric (GE) has unveiled its Energy Smart LED bulb which is set to cost consumers around $50 (£32.50), which is 25 times the average price of an incandescent version.
However, as PC Mag reports, despite its seemingly hefty price tag, the lifespan of the product is said to be 25 times that of an incandescent bulb.
Furthermore, thanks to its updated design using diodes instead of heated-up filament, the bulb will use only a quarter of the energy to achieve 450 lumens while producing the equivalent brightness levels of 40-watt luminaries.
Incandescent light bulbs look set to be phased out over the next few years as numerous governments around the world legislate for more efficient lighting to illuminate homes and manufacturers, such as Toshiba, focus on LED technology.
