Expansion of the global LED industry and facilities to manufacture them are "mushrooming", according an industry expert.
Global Infromation has published a new report giving an overview for production of LED and optoelectronic fabs worldwide.
Clark Tseng, senior manager market analyst at Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), suggested that even in the downturn of 2009, its own database recorded seven new chip fabs "coming online".
Mr Tseng said that upcoming developments will primarily be from China and Taiwan, but expected new production lines in India, Russia and Japan, which currently has the largest number of manufacturing facilities in the sector.
"LED expansion and new facility projects have literally mushroomed all over the world," he added.
Last month, electronic component maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) announced its intention to move into the industry with development of its first LED chip fab.
Furthermore, TSMC signalled its intent to move into the "promising" lighting industry in the coming months.
