Emulex, a provider of network solutions to businesses, is to acquire fabless semiconductor company ServerEngines, having worked with the firm over the past two years in a bid to establish itself in the Ethernet market.
Jim McCluney, Emulex's president and chief executive, suggested the combination of ServerEngines' expertise in this sector and with Internet Small Computer System Interface presented an opportunity to solidify its convergence strategy for 2011 and beyond.
According to the company, its acquisition allows it access to a range of best-in-class performance Ethernet applications, all of which are designed to meet cost and space demands of electronic appliance manufacturers for network on motherboard features.
Mr McCluney continued: "We estimate that the incremental opportunity for the new products to be acquired will add as much as $350 million (£241 million) to our Total Addressable Market by 2013."
Emulex is based in California and generated revenue of $142 million in 2008.
