Global brand Littelfuse has unveiled a new LED circuit protection device that can increase lighting string reliability and reduce costs for manufacturers of diode-based innovations.
Its PLED18 series is designed for a growing market in outdoor energy-efficient luminaires and high-intensity applications.
The new component features a voltage-triggered electronic shunt system, which can provide a current bypass in the event that a single LED fails while ensuring that a string of diodes can continue to operate should one not be able to work.
Compared with other protection devices, its more economical circuit design is said to assist in reduce colour unevenness, prevent "voltage level sags" in power supplies and use less energy than zener diodes that perform similar functions.
Established in 1927, Littelfuse generated sales revenue of more than $430 million (£291 million) in 2009 and has operations in 14 countries around the world serving a range of industries including automotive, telecoms and consumer electronics.
