Light sensors may be seeing greater demand from the unlikely market of nursery products.
NPD Group notes how the European nursery equipment market has grown in recent years.
Frederique Tutt, industry analyst at NPD Group, says: "Once again, the kids' market has proven its resilience to the hardest recession since the 1980s and industry sales have grown thanks to product innovation and increased promotional activity."
While each country is said to be different, there is one common feature reported by the analyst which could have a bearing on the European market for light sensors.
This is the trend towards video baby monitors which, along with other digital observation devices for nurseries, have seen increased uptake.
Britain leads the market with year-on-year growth of five per cent over the course of 2009, with France also achieving expansion at two per cent.
Following the UK's general election, NPD Group global senior vice-president of toys Jane Zimmy noted cautious optimism among children's product retailers in the country.
She pointed out the sustainability of the market in France as well, with 800,000 babies born there every year.
