The benefits of LEDs over other lighting technologies include the uniform surface illuminance and colour rendering that can be achieved over longer distances, according to one manufacturer.
Evluma, a division of Express Imaging Systems, works on the progress of lighting solutions for a wide array of applications which consume lower energy than existing products.
In its Clearlight Beacon replacement luminaire, built using LEDs from Cree, it claims to cut energy consumption by 50 per cent compared with high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs and by 70 per cent from mercury vapour (MV) lamps.
"Because LED lighting offers better colour rendering and a more uniform surface illuminance than HPS or MV, it is possible to do more with less light," says Evluma president and chief executive officer Keith Miller.
The firm adds that retrofitting using compatible bulbs is the quickest way to achieve energy savings, as no cost must be faced for a new light fitting.
