Effective power management is an important element in the future of IT for business environments, according to industry analyst Gartner.
The research organisation suggests that there are seven concerns shared by chief executive officers (CEOs) that could be tackled by their chief information officers (CIOs).
Among these is the need for long-term sustainability in business practices and the impact that power management in IT infrastructure might have on achieving this.
Gartner adds that, while simply reducing power consumption is one step that can be taken, the issue is more complex than that.
"For most organisations the more important and strategic issue is how IT can help the business to operate more sustainably," the analyst says.
Investment into IT systems which improve power management could be among the greater expenditure predicted for enterprises over the coming year.
By the end of 2011, Gartner forecasts a three per cent rise in the total amount spent on IT by businesses worldwide.
