Wireless communications devices do not need to have large amount of onboard storage capacity, providing they can access public cloud services.
That is the suggestion of Ed Vaizey, the UK government's communications minister.
He says cloud computing has benefits for businesses in terms of their ability to enter new markets with minimal physical infrastructure of their own.
"This is especially significant today, at a time when we are seeing an explosion in the number of portable devices with limited storage capacity," he continues.
Mr Vaizey argues that cloud computing can therefore be a significant cost-cutting technology for organisations which use wireless communications devices extensively.
However, he does foresee a need for greater confidence among end-users in the security levels of the cloud computing services they access.
The suggestion echoes the EUREKA Group's recent assertion that security should be incorporated into IT at all levels, from electronic components to full systems and the applications that they run.
