LED lights have been recommended for consideration by designers working on period properties.
According to Eva Hammerson, head of design at lighting developer Kandabi, there has been reluctance in previous years to use LED lights in older homes, for fear that they may not suit the historical nature of the building.
But she calls this "a true missed opportunity" and urges designers to consider the modern technology, as it is flexible enough to deal with different environments.
"The right type and use of mood lighting can greatly enhance any style of property," Ms Hammerson says.
Her suggestion is part of her observation of a wider trend relating to the use of LED bulbs in mood lighting installations.
This, she says, represents "a whole new world" for householders, following a number of years of the technology being used primarily by professionals.
Now, however, individuals can explore the technology for use in their own home.
