New research has suggested that the percentage of LCD TVs with LED backlight edges will explode in 2011.
DisplaySearch's Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment–Advanced LED Report found that panel makers are targeting rapid increases for LED backlights in LCD TVs.
The report expects to see the market grow from 36 per cent in Q1 2011 to 62 per cent in Q4 2011, for an overall penetration of 53 per cent for 2011.
"Despite some buildup of LED-backlit TV panel inventories in the second half of 2010, the industry has recognised that LED backlighting is an irreversible trend, with benefits such as lower power consumption and slimness," observed David Hsieh, DisplaySearch vice president and research leader for large-area panels.
"This has encouraged LCD TV panel makers to reduce LED backlighting costs continuously in order to increase shipments."
For last year, penetration reached 21 per cent, up from two per cent in 2009.
