Car manufacturer Audi has confirmed its intention to include a car which features all-LED headlamps at Le Mans.
Borrowing a development originally created for the twelve-cylinder Audi A8, the Audi R18 TDI is the first production car in the world to feature headlights that incorporate an array of ultra-bright light-emitting diodes, or LEDs.
"When you've driven once with full LED headlights you don’t want to have anything else," remarked Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen.
He explained: "The light is stronger and vibrates less than a normal headlight - this is a clear advantage and particularly at Le Mans, a track that has many dark braking points in the night."
The LED lights are more reliable than traditional lighting technologies - something from which both race and road cars can benefit.
The new technologies used in the R18 TDI's headlights will flow down into Audi's production cars, the manufacturer has confirmed.
