In news that may interest mobile communications device manufacturers, new research has claimed that Nokia must put the needs of mobile operators ahead of consumers' more radical requirements for its tie-up with Microsoft to take off.
According to Michael Morgan, senior analyst of mobile devices at the global connectivity and emerging technology market intelligence company, Nokia is the "only ecosystem that is 'trusted' by global carriers".
"Nokia will have to be careful that it retains and strengthens these relationships to keep its distribution reach and access to consumers," Mr Morgan said, adding Nokia would achieve this through "'safe and simple' smartphones that are pretty to the eye, but have a very 'controlled' application and services back end".
"This 'control' will focus on maximising carrier needs, at the cost of the consumer's wildest desires," he explained.
ABI Research believes Nokia's losses will accelerate through 2011, according to estimates it published last week.
