Wireless communication device manufacturers may be interested to hear that HP has suggested that newcomers to cloud computing services face substantial security risks.
Recently, the EU identified the potential cost savings and revenues attached to the cloud as part of a public consultation on how best to implement the developing technology.
Despite this, Subbu Iyer, senior director of products, application lifecycle management software at HP, described security in the cloud as "a huge concern".
"If you're moving a critical business process completely onto the cloud, the first area that CIOs [chief information officers] are concerned with is, 'Is it secure?'" he said.
"We see a lot of opportunity both from a cloud computing and a mobile perspective - those two areas are where most customers are asking for solutions and looking at security as a huge complement to moving onto the cloud."
Neelie Kroes, European Commission vice-president for the Digital Agenda, has called for a well-defined cloud computing strategy to harness the developing technology's potential.
