Report reveals vulnerability of smartphone devices

In news that is likely to interest wireless communications device manufacturers, new research has found that 19 out of 20 smartphone and tablet users in UK use their devices without installing any malware or virus protection.

Carried out by the leading internet research firm Juniper Research, the study found that just four per cent of the UK's smartphone and tablet users were protected by anti-malware software, ITPro.com has reported.

"The increasing extent to which personal and corporate data is stored on mobile devices and the recognition of the need to protect it will create a $3.6 billion (£2.21 billion) opportunity for mobile security software providers by 2016," the Juniper report said.

"High-profile security alerts are likely to heighten the public's awareness of this growing issue," Juniper confirmed.

Last week, online protection firm Norton said that it is tough to identify cyber attacks on social networking websites as they are often delivered via a trusted connection.

    Smart phone users are shooting themselves in the foot every time they call someone or download an app.

    People need to wake up and protect themselves or face the consequences.

  • I find it amazing that people failed to recognize that a smart phone was just another PC just being used to communicate data and voice.  I suspect that some bad guys have been making a good haul from people carelessly putting their identy information into a device that can be hacked from anywhere in the world!

    It was hard enough to educate people about email.  The education needed to alert everyone to the potential liability of their smart phones is going to take a lot of time and a lot of people are going to suffer loss of property and money before it gets fixed.  The rush to adopt new technology before it is fully understood is truly aiding and abetting criminals who, while not as smart as some, are single minded in their pursuit of taking easy money from careless people.

    Sadly, it is this self inflicted security breach that will eventually result in a loss of freedom for those who use the technology as intended.
