HTC starts testing Gingerbread for Desire smartphone

Wireless communications device firm HTC has begun quality assurance testing for the Gingerbread firmware that has been identified for a roll out on the popular Desire smartphone.

Originally, the Taiwanese handset manufacturer said that it wouldn't bring Gingerbread to the Desire due to hardware restrictions.

In just a few hours, though, HTC backtracked on that decision. In an update to their Facebook page, HTC said: "When we have an update on availability we'll post another announcement. Thanks for your support!"

Meanwhile, it has been suggested that the N9, Nokia's latest smartphone offering, may not be released in the UK.

Industry commentator Chris Martin claimed that Nokia has not identified the UK on its list of countries to check for compatibility.

Mr Martin, writing for the Inquirer, said there are now serious doubts about whether or not the Meego-powered device be made available to UK consumers.

However, Nokia's communications manager, Mark Hindle, neither confirmed nor denied these fears.

It seems from HTC's perspective (or their 'original excuse') that there was not enough room in the internal memory for Android 2.3 and the HTC Sense UI front end. However this is odd as there are a few custom ROMs floating around that do have both. Personally I think HTC was holding back on Gingerbread in order to drive sales of newer handsets, however the insanely-quick backlash prompted HTC to get Gingerbread on the Desire and keep everyone happy.

Personally I am glad for this as we generally sign 24-month agreements for these handsets, and losing OS upgrade support when still technically possible after 12 months does feel rather poor; and also would have affected my decision of which brand of phone to upgrade to when the contract expires.
