MWR InfoSecurity has warned that lapses in website security are likely to continue, wireless communication device manufacturers may be interested to learn.
According to reports, police in the US, Britain and the Netherlands have detained more than 20 people as part of an investigation into the attacks.
The majority of the attacks took place in the US, where the FBI confirmed 16 people had been held for alleged computer hacking.
Alex Fidgen, a director at MWR InfoSecurity, explained that this is an industry-wide problem.
He said: "There is a problem that is growing across the industry, and that is we are becoming more and more reliant upon security assurances provided by these organisations without any evidence.
"One thing that is actually certain is we're not going to see incidences such as these diminish. They are for the time being only going to increase, because I think there is an industry-wide problem."
