Certain types of businesses work well on different social media platforms, it has been claimed.
Mike Seddon, founder of KKSmarts.com, cited Facebook as an example, explaining that the growth rate of users is much faster in people aged in their 30s and 40s than those in their 20s.
Mr Seddon advised looking at the demographic of your business and deciding whether that's going to fit well.
"I would suggest that for arguments sake, if you're a firm of solicitors you probably wouldn't go into Facebook you probably would go into LinkedIn," he said.
"Twitter is a difficult one," Mr Seddon explained, "I don't think Twitter is a great place for companies to promote themselves but I think it's an excellent place for companies to listen to what's going on in the market."
He suggested that while social media may not help win any business, it can help to reveal the kind of questions that are being asked in the marketplace.
