The inclusion of near field communication (NFC) is likely to have a positive impact on the popularity of Blackberry 7 phones, one expert has suggested.
Conrad Longmore, editor of Mobile Gazette, explained that NFC can be used for payments, airline check-ins, gaming or as a way to advertise products.
"There aren't a lot of practical applications for NFC at the moment, in part because there are very few NFC-enabled handsets," Mr Longmore remarked.
"However," he added, "NFC is making its way into phones from several manufacturers that will be hitting the market later this year, so things should improve."
Earlier this month, Michael Morgan, senior analyst for mobile devices at ABI Research, claimed that Research In Motion's operating system is a "little stale".
He explained that this does not mean that the firm's operating system is not bad per se.
They are, in fact, actually good, solid technological foundations "but the trend has changed", Mr Morgan said.
