In news that may interest wireless communication device users, Sony Ericsson has confirmed that it will solely focus on smartphones from 2012.
The announcement was made as the firm reported that it broke even in its third quarter, confirming that it shipped 9.5 million handsets over the most recent trading period, a nine per cent drop year-on-year.
Bert Nordberg, president and chief executive of Sony Ericsson, explained: "We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012."
Furthermore, Mr Nordberg refused to rule out launching models that run Windows Mobile 7, the new operating system from Microsoft.
He did, however, stress that for now, Android remains the firm's platform of choice.
Meanwhile, rival manufacturer Samsung Electronics recently announced a better-than-expected profit forecast because of success in the handset market.
Samsung said that it is expecting operating profit to hit $3.5 billion (£2.3 billion) for the third quarter of 2011.
