Enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich on TV with Lenovo K91

Lenovo’s K91 could define what a “smart TV” is all about. Not only because it runs on Qualcomm 1.5 GHz dual-core 8060 Snapdragon processor but also because it is the first television to feature an Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Think of it is a 55-inch ICS tablet without the touchscreen feature.

If there’s no touchscreen then how do you control it? Like any other TV, you control by remote. But not just an ordinary remote mind you, as it sports a touch-pad, 5-way d-pad, microphone and a motion sensor. Having the last one means you can play games similar to those found on the Nintendo Wii. A microphone is present for a good reason: it can accept voice commands with natural language processing and recognition.

A 5 megapixel camera is integrated into the TV’s bezel. You can use it beyond video chats and photo capturing as the TV supports facial recognition and video interaction. Of course, the K91 does not lack on the display department as it is using 3D FPR technology with a full HD IPS panel. The display is a LED backlit LCD with a 240Hz refresh rate, flicker-free.

But the strength of the K91 is not on its hardware but rather on its ICS user interface. It successfully integrates your ordinary TV with video-on-demand features via custom-built applications. Just “request” the movie you want through the remote and the TV will search it for you on the internet. Speaking of internet, the K91 connects through Wi-Fi only. You can save up to 8 GB of data with an option to expand via SD card. You can also access the Market or the Lenovo Store for your favorite Android apps and games. And in case you don’t like swinging the remote to play Asphalt 6, you can use the included horizontal game pad or use your Lenovo phone or tablet.

Lenovo is in for a great year with the K91 and the first-ever Intel-powered smartphone, K800. But unlike K800 whose release date is announced (Q2 of 2012), Lenovo is still mum on when consumers can get their hands on their smart TV. It is definitely a TV to anticipate, no matter if you are an Android fan or not.
