Toyota will start sales of a super-small electric vehicle in Japan for less than 1 million yen, or about $12,600 U.S., Green Car Congress reported, citing the Japan-based publication Nikkei. The model will be based on Toyota's updated COMS one-person EV that was unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.
The automaker's Toyota Auto Body division will add a seat and seatbelt in the COMS's cargo area in order to turn the little runabout into a vehicle built for two. The Japanese government is working out details of standards related to ultra-compact EVs and where they can be driven. Toyota first introduced the COMS EV at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007.
