2016 Year in Preview: The Future of element14

2015 has been a seriously busy year for us, and we're looking forward to an equally hectic 2016! Since Christmas, we've been investigating, with your assistance, how various tech concepts and platforms might evolve over the next 12 months., but now it's time to look inside.


To finish off our Year in Review, and our Year in Preview, let's put the spotlight on the Community itself, and open the floor for you guys to help shape its growth over the next year and beyond.


How Do We Put U into Community?


Don't pull your punches here. We really want to know what's gone wrong, what'd gone right, and where there's good cause for change, adaptation and expansion.


And we genuinely mean it when we say that this is your Community. So much like rearranging the furniture in your own home, tell us how we can make this not just a comfortable place for you to spend your precious spare time, but also what would make it more entertaining, more ergonomic, and more productive.


What aspects, programs, discussions, projects or campaigns really resonated with your this year? Which ones should we do more of, or less of, or do differently? Where do we fall short compared to the other communities, forums and websites you enjoy frequenting? What changes would make element14 a better place for you this time next year, than it is today?


Tell us all about the future of element14 Community below (and what you'd like to see, as much as what we will see), and we'll reconvene this time next year to see how close we got to the mark.

  • I think @dougw 's idea of sponsoring mentor-ships would be a great addition to the community.  Those of us who work for smaller companies (and small businesses are the future) can tell you that often there are no mentors available within your organization.  In most instances throughout my career I have been the only person in my organization who does what I do.  So, the ability to go to a community like E14 and seek out a mentor would be very beneficial to the industry. 

  • The e14 staff do a great job finding ways to motivate participation with all kinds of forum topics, participation "Likes", questions, answers, BH suggestions & creations, badges, MoMs, MoYs, badges, give-aways, contests, road tests, blog challenges, design challenges, etc.

    It is a spectacular eco-system with excellent ROI for all concerned.

    So keep up the the great work looking for more motivations to entice an even wider audience to participate.

    Maybe a "Member-of-the Week" would allow more members to enjoy that kind of success.

    More small give-away contests would encourage more participation without requiring extensive commitments.

    Even swag contests seem to have wide appeal.

    I'm still pondering what structure and logistics might spawn a successful mentorship system.

    I know these things are a lot of work, but hey, you wanted suggestions....

    Excellent comment.  I don't use element14's search unless it's something really simple.  Sometimes I need to reference a comment I wrote a long time ago and Google is the way to do it.

     

    As with any search function, you can only search for things that you already know exist and what they're called.  Otherwise they are invisible.  It's hard to stumble on things at element14 by browsing around, so there's lots of treasure that a new user isn't going to find.  Some things are always hard to find like Cypress PSoC development boards.  I generally point people to cypress.com/psoc pages because I can't find the equivalent pages here.

  • I think the past year sets the tone for the coming year at Element 14.

    We have a good group of members who help those in need and are freely exchanging ideas and skills.

     

    I know there is a desire to expand Element 14 into a major community, but I think we now have a fairly comfortable support level in which to entice more people to participate.

     

    Time will tell.

  • You need to have upside down fonts installed so that I can read everything without turning my PC and tablet upside down.

     

    You should release a new computer platform with an M.2 nVMe interface and FPGA called "Cheese Cake".

    This'll allow me to have my cake and eat it too!
