Happy Valentines Day! - What do you Love / Hate about Electronics?

13 Feb 2020

(or singles awareness day)

Everyone has a love in their life, their partner, pet, a television show, and for others it is their favourite electronics project that takes pride of place in their application or showcase.

Though for most of us, we do not always love our electronics, in fact, they can be the bane of our existence. Whether it's the work virtual private networking not functioning, computer memory deciding to fail, or our mobile phone not having signal.

For me recently, it was the Bluetooth transmitter receiver not transmitting, until I flicked it to receive, paired it, then flicked it to transmit. I hate the fact I have to do that, and yet I love how well it now works! Paired up with a Raspberry Pi Zero it functions as a Bluetooth speaker with extra facilities!

How's your love/hate relationship with electronics? Perhaps you have a project tale similar to myself, or do you hate a particular item outright? If I was to choose something I hate, it's how invariable the electronic sparkers work on gas ovens and hobs!

Let us know in the comments below image and you should earn a badge and some points for your efforts - unless the gamification's failed me! (damn technology image)

I love when electronics make life easier. I hate it when they do so not-quite fully reliably, so you can't really trust them fully. My biggest grumble right now is non-repairable and non-upgradeable hardware…

While I'm thinking of things that drive me crazy - I hate that Microsoft and Apple always do a super job of pushing out updates that will mess up a PC or phone/tablet that had been working great. And my…

My pet peeves are devices built down to a price but designed to last just long enough to see out the warranty. I’ve had quite a few Nespresso machines that have lasted 3 years and 2 months - guess what…

Like my petrol engined Flymo with a metal body and a self-drive mechanism made of crap plastic that broke just after the warranty, rendering the machine useless because it fouled the blades. The other…

I generally have no major issues with electronics. I usually show them some love by keeping them clean, feeding them decent quality power, keeping them sheltered and in a comfortably cool environment.…

I kinda love the way the magic of computers and the internets allows folks from around the globe to come together virtually to share a love for whatever they are into - but I hate it all with a passion when it fails to work because of poor design/programming/budgetary restrictions (yeah work, I'm looking at you there).

Even more annoying is when a bit of wind and rain makes your internets flaky (currently having to use my mobile hotspot to type this as my internets is up and down like a yoyo!!

I also love it when a thing I designed from the ground up in 3D actually works first time . . . . . . . and when someone else prints it and shares the love - even better!

Not so pleased when someone else moans because it needs fettling because it doesn't fit for them (try calibrating your printer, it's a tight tolerance part)!! image

We had 4 ‘safety’ recalls plus a new roof on the car.  At the end of three years it turns out to be worth knack-all so back it went.  When I mentioned that it didn’t seem good enough to have a new roof and this many recalls he thought that the right answer was “it’s not too bad, my wife’s A-class has had 8 recalls”.  We’d never buy another one because we just feel the quality isn’t there, and we feel screwed over by the finance. It’s a strange driving experience as well because they lay out the controls so differently.  I keep turning the wipers on when trying to put the new car into Drive!

Slightly off topic there a bit - but the general “it’s our way not the rest of the world’s way” approach to product design can be very annoying when interfaces become standardised.  Can you imagine someone trying to introduce an alternative ‘pinch-to-zoom’ interface on a phone?  Samsung doing a ‘open eyes wide’ to zoom out; ‘screw eyes closed’ to zoom in. image

I didn't know this happened. My education is sadly lacking in the lifetime of electronic components.

All I can say is, shame on any manufacturer who purposely adds software or mechanical weak points to ensure a future repair or new sale. Lack of robust testing of high cycled components is also not good i.e. switches, door hinges. There are many makes that are now on my 'avoid' list due to past experiences of poor engineering.

Note to manufacturers: strive to be proud that your consumer base 'sings the praise' of your equipment reliability, in the longer term you will take a bigger share of the market from your less reliable competition. As consumers are becoming more and more interested in the environment this should be a bigger driving factor.

I hate some component manufacturers that force you to install yet another Eclipse based IDE, so you have 10 of them on your PC.

Thanks, that explains something to me. I had Eclipse installed already and when I started roadtesting the Maxim MAX32650-EVKIT the vendor install created a new separate version of Eclipse when I thought it would simply add some drivers, paths or the like into my existing version. Its good for me learning a new board as this version works seamlessly but also seems a bit needless.
