Happy Valentines Day! - What do you Love / Hate about Electronics?

Everyone has a love in their life, their partner, pet, a television show, and for others it is their favourite electronics project that takes pride of place in their application or showcase.

 

Though for most of us, we do not always love our electronics, in fact, they can be the bane of our existence. Whether it's the work virtual private networking not functioning, computer memory deciding to fail, or our mobile phone not having signal.

 

For me recently, it was the Bluetooth transmitter receiver not transmitting, until I flicked it to receive, paired it, then flicked it to transmit. I hate the fact I have to do that, and yet I love how well it now works! Paired up with a Raspberry Pi Zero it functions as a Bluetooth speaker with extra facilities!

 

How's your love/hate relationship with electronics? Perhaps you have a project tale similar to myself, or do you hate a particular item outright? If I was to choose something I hate, it's how invariable the electronic sparkers work on gas ovens and hobs!

  • I love it when you get a board back, populate it and... it works! I don't know why this still surprises me every time.

    I hate it when it doesn't quite work. You've waited weeks on the slow (cheap) boat from China to find you have a little hardware bug.

    Like my petrol engined Flymo with a metal body and a self-drive mechanism made of crap plastic that broke just after the warranty, rendering the machine useless because it fouled the blades. 

     

    The other thing related to 'waste of resources' is the use of base elements to create pointless electronic devices or things.  I know kids love them, but helium balloons are a prime example.  It may be an abundant resource in the Universe but our only accessible source is here on Earth and once it's used it's gone because it can't be recaptured.  Then they stick buzzers and all sorts in them with batteries and flashing lights and other electronic gizmos that have a single use purpose.

     

    Environmentally, there should be a law against this kind of thing because it's a criminal waste of resources - at least in my mind, if not the statute books.

    Me too!  Really annoying to find you that I had designed the PCB for a 50nH inductor rather than 50uH!  A very expensive mistake.  Not the first one either - relying on other's footprints can be a mistake too.

    Thing I love to see - the repairability of my home Synology NAS since I had to open it the other day.. it's had 8+ years of uptime, and auto-shut down after a fan failure. I ordered a spare, but instead thought I'd use an air spray on the old fan.. it's back to normal : ) As is the 8-year-old spinning disk inside it from Hitachi.. (It doesn't store anything critical that isn't backed up). It is now decade-old tech, but I'm glad I don't need to replace it.

    2.     I hate joining them together to find overall it doesn't work image

    3.     I love the first few hours of switching back and forth between 1 & 2 image

    4.     I hate doing (3) after a day or two of getting nowhere image

    5.     I like doing some RF work, its super cool and fun image

    6.     I hate doing RF work, as the magic part often makes (2) worse image
