New home, first lab!

26 Jan 2025

After more than a year of work to tidy up everything, I finally moved from my parents house to my new apartment, living on my own for the first time.

With the move, I managed to gain something that I had wished for a long time: a dedicated space for my home lab. The desk is self built to maximize the space available (and to save some money), obtaining a comfortable 3.2m long by 0.9m deep work surface to set up both soldering and measuring instruments at the same time, plus a small space in between for the pc.

To store all instruments and tools, I was able to repurpose some old furniture that was around in the apartment, so I don't need to keep dusting them Slight smile.

Life is still pretty busy but I hope to be enjoying my new space soon, maybe with a roadtest or by participating for my first time to a design challenge!

I like shelves at the back of the bench for test gear. Keeps the cables out of the way (to an extent). The easily accessible gear changes quite often according to what I'm working on.

    Tidiness is volatile.

Are those shelves part of the desk or a separate piece? I'm thinking how could I build something on top of my desk but I would prefer to not drill any hole in the wall to fix stuff

The shelves are free standing from Ikea and they stand behind the bench. Currently up against the wall but even better to have a gap if you have space, so you can creep along behind them to move gear or wires.

They do a range of this stuff and I bought a load of it about 25 years ago. Easy to put up and take down - mine has moved 3 times.

Plain pine (you can paint or varnish if you like) and easily adjustable shelf positions. No wall attached needed (well maybe a strap or two to stop them falling on you !)
