I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’m hoping it leads to far more funding and increasing the size of ISS, at least.
Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE), the company co-producing Tom Cruise’s upcoming space movie, recently announced plans to build a film production studio and sports arena in space. SEE expects the SEE-1 module, which will dock on Axiom Station, the International Space Station’s commercial wing, to be complete in December 2024. Axiom station expects to undock with SEE-1 from the ISS in 2028. Earlier this month, Axiom won the contract to develop the commercial wing.
The studio can host television, films, music, and sporting events. However, both the on-site audience and content creator capacity responsible for producing, recording, broadcasting, and live streaming 250 miles above the earth is still unknown. While third-party providers are allowed to use the facility, SEE wants to produce its content.

Whether Axiom and SEE can deliver on this plan remains to be seen. Although SEE hasn’t released any costs for this project, it plans to run a fundraising round. A Russian crew filmed a fictional movie in space in 2021, beating Tom Cruise and his director Doug Liman to this achievement. That movie, called The Challenge, is set to be released later this year. Meanwhile, Cruise and Liman are scheduled to shoot their film on the ISS sometime this year.
