Video Test: Record multiple sources with OBS (2 cameras, Data Sheet, 2 instrument displays)

I'm trying out OBS as recording software.

It allows to mix sources on a single screen. In my case:

  • laptop camera for my face
  • USB cam for the bench, taped to a chair image
  • 3 windows: DMM display, eLoad display and datasheet in acrobat reader
  • record from Jabra wireless headset microphone.

There are some watchouts:

  • resizing the windows can make characters too small for reading (see eLoad window)
  • my layout is way too busy - less is more
  • Better cam for the bench would be appropriate.
  • It's not easy to switch in and out screens while recording. It breaks the flow. It may be better to stop recording, select screens, then continue
  • No mouse activity highlight (some recorders show an animation when you click the mouse, helps give feedback to the viewer).

What you can also try is setting up your displays as different scenes. Then when you want to switch what you are recording, you would just pick a different scene. If you watch some of the streaming gamers…

Interesting... I haven't used either OBS Studio or CamTwist. I'm just using the Logitech Capture program that came with my webcam. I'll have to give these a try.

I downloaded it and tried. I haven't looked for a manual. After approx. half an hour of clicking around and looking at settings, I got to the point shown in the video. It originally errored when I tried…

After testing both software, it seems that what you have used is good for the job, recording while the other is better (created for) real time video broadcasting.

Jan, the "depression effect" happens to me too everytime I try a new setup. Don't desist, this is a great result. Enrico

Yes. That requires thinking ahead though - something I never do when recording a video . I also need to check the sound. The volume isn't constant. I don't have that with the usual tools (a tablet for…

Nice. I've used OBS for a couple of years now for my videos and it seems to work pretty good. You may need to fiddle with the Sound and the Video format to get the best options that fit your needs.

Han good idea. If you have a Mac, try also the open-source camtwist studio ( CamTwist ) that has lot of more possibilities. Look at the videos on the site, it is very well done. Enrico

My first test was easy, using it as a way to capture my work in front of a PC.

I just made a video while replacing the battery in a Keythley DMM6500.

It's not a PC-focused activity. I use a tablet to record the work, and tried to use OBS to create the final video.

That wasn't straightforward. So for that one, I reverted back to using the default WIndows Movie Maker:

Jan Cumps  Thanks for sharing this.  I only heard of this program within the week and it is one my list of things to try.  It looks very useful.

It originally errored when I tried to record, saying my video driver may be outdated. I switched to another hw decoder and now it works.
