Year of the Monkey Badge: The Lunar Calendar

Year of the MonkeyCelebrate Chinese New Year with element14!

Day One: The Lunar Calendar

Nimen hao, wo pengyou!

In celebration of the Chinese New Year, which begins on February 8, we're launching a brand new badge for all you cheeky monkeys to get your digital hands on. Over the next week we'll run a fun, frolic-filled blog post each day around various aspects of the New Year on the run up to one of the world's most celebrated holidays.

And as you know, it's the Year of the Monkey, so in order to win our time-limited badge, all you need to do is stop by to read and comment on each of our New Year blogs. The badge will only be available to earn until February 23, after which you'll have to wait 12 years before it comes up again (given the cycle of the Chinese zodiac).

Cool Calendar Contraptions

image

By Western calendars, the Chinese New Year changes its date each year. This is because it's based on the lunar calendar, rather than rigid Gregorian time scales. This put us in mind of calendars in general, and the relativity of time as it's perceived by you humans.

So to kick things off, we want to hear all about your great ideas for an electronics project that centers on calendars, clocks and time pieces. It could be a project you've already made (in which case tell us all about it) or a simply a concept you've been toying with.

Give us the how, what and why of your project idea in the comments below, and you'd a step closer to climbing the peach tree!

I quite fancy another clock project, perhaps something with a monkey who pops out a door and crashes some cymbals when it's time to get the train to work? Here's a clock I made earlier

This is definitely not a very original idea, but ages ago I tried to build one using 60 bi-colour LEDs. I don't have a photo of it any more (it was a present so I don't have it to take a photo) but this…

I need a clock design that more accurately accommodates my needs. I want it to run slower when I need more time and then catch up when I am bored or sleeping. John

Is element14 following me or reading my mind? Last week I have bought 2 shift registers and a RTC IC to create a word clock from scratch... Hope I don't lose interest and finish this up

It has been done before, but I really want to make a clock like that of Lord Vetinari.

"The clock ticked its arrhythmic tock. It finally stuttered its way to one o'clock, and Vimes got up and went into the Oblong Office."

I would love to make a nixie tube clock. I really loved the nixie displays when I was first starting out and love the retro look of the projects.

Why not a single digit year-clock ? Just what year it is, a very slow processor (made with transistors) is sufficient image
