How Are You Using AI in Engineering (If at All)?

AI is changing the way people work but what about engineers and technical professionals like you? We’re starting a discussion to explore if, how, and why (or why not!) engineers are using AI in their daily workflows.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the following:

Do You Use AI Tools?

  • If yes, what do you use?

  • Are these tools standalone, or built into your existing software?

  • If no, what’s stopping you?

How AI Fits Into Your Workflow

  • What tasks or problems do you currently use AI to help solve?

  • Where has it worked well for you?

  • Where does it fall short?

  • How confident do you feel using AI in a technical context?

  • How do you keep up with new AI tools or features?

What Would Make AI More Useful?

  • Can you think of something you do that could be improved with AI?

  • Do you think AI will support more of your daily work in the future?

Outside Influences

  • Do you know any colleagues or teams that are using AI? What are they doing with it?

  • Are there platforms or sources you trust for staying up to date on AI trends in engineering? (e.g. newsletters, forums, blogs)

We’re looking to learn how AI fits (or doesn’t!) into your professional life and what might help make it more relevant.

Point down Drop your experiences, questions, or skepticism below. We’re listening!

I think AI has two sides just like a coin. Wrong side and a right one.!! There are a lot of things where using AI is not advisable at all. Like taking technical advice for safety related or design related…

I am still a skeptic on AI because you cannot verify its reliability in all cases. If you are planning to use AI, I recommend an extensive integration and test process to verify that your solution provides…

I do not use AI in any way. I am happy getting my answers from the actual reference materials that hold the real data. I have developed searching skills that pretty reliably find the materials that I need…

Is there a reason for this? I'm curious as AI seems to be mentioned in the majority of conversations I have (appreciate we are in different fields!)

Alanta Lee Basically a combination of wrong answers and bad pieces of advice with a touch of obstination.

That totally makes sense, sounds like you've had some frustrating experiences with it. Was that with general purpose tools, or something more domain specific?

I’m curious, is there anything AI could do in your workflow that might change your mind, or is it more a case of “tried it, not worth the hassle”?

Alanta Lee One exemple is when I asked why Gecko chose a Darlington device as the in.flow sensor in their in.xe packs I was answered there is no way a transistor could be used as a flow sensor and they used a pressure switch in the in.xe. That was with general purpose AI. It could be useful for reverse engineering and documenting orphaned or defunct devices. That is if it worked correctly.
