How Are You Using AI in Engineering (If at All)?

AI is changing the way people work but what about engineers and technical professionals like you? We’re starting a discussion to explore if, how, and why (or why not!) engineers are using AI in their daily workflows.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the following:

Do You Use AI Tools?

  • If yes, what do you use?

  • Are these tools standalone, or built into your existing software?

  • If no, what’s stopping you?

How AI Fits Into Your Workflow

  • What tasks or problems do you currently use AI to help solve?

  • Where has it worked well for you?

  • Where does it fall short?

  • How confident do you feel using AI in a technical context?

  • How do you keep up with new AI tools or features?

What Would Make AI More Useful?

  • Can you think of something you do that could be improved with AI?

  • Do you think AI will support more of your daily work in the future?

Outside Influences

  • Do you know any colleagues or teams that are using AI? What are they doing with it?

  • Are there platforms or sources you trust for staying up to date on AI trends in engineering? (e.g. newsletters, forums, blogs)

We’re looking to learn how AI fits (or doesn’t!) into your professional life and what might help make it more relevant.

Point down Drop your experiences, questions, or skepticism below. We’re listening!

I think AI has two sides just like a coin. Wrong side and a right one.!! There are a lot of things where using AI is not advisable at all. Like taking technical advice for safety related or design related…

I am still a skeptic on AI because you cannot verify its reliability in all cases. If you are planning to use AI, I recommend an extensive integration and test process to verify that your solution provides…

I do not use AI in any way. I am happy getting my answers from the actual reference materials that hold the real data. I have developed searching skills that pretty reliably find the materials that I need…

Sure, If I use that tool, I will post my reviews.

Have you come across any teams, forums, or communities that are trying to do that well?

Recently, I was quite interested in Apache Software foundation projects. I attended one of their conference last year. BTW, not specifically AI related projects that I am involved in, but they would surely have some project that has AI involved. I liked the ASF's principles and how they do the governance in general. They things are quite systematic. That's what I prefer. I still will continue with these projects and try to attend more events.

I think conferences and meetings are the places where we can discuss such large topics and guide the software workforce accordingly. And I am sure that other organizations are also trying to do the same.

The project about code correction was a part of my masters project 6 years back. The project was based upon another project that used ML model and LSTM based neural network to find coding syntax errors. Some others in this domain was based on Reinforcement learning tools.

This was the small project during my masters in Germany. They still continue to publish papers on this.

Alanta Lee One exemple is when I asked why Gecko chose a Darlington device as the in.flow sensor in their in.xe packs I was answered there is no way a transistor could be used as a flow sensor and they used a pressure switch in the in.xe. That was with general purpose AI. It could be useful for reverse engineering and documenting orphaned or defunct devices. That is if it worked correctly.

That totally makes sense, sounds like you've had some frustrating experiences with it. Was that with general purpose tools, or something more domain specific?

I’m curious, is there anything AI could do in your workflow that might change your mind, or is it more a case of “tried it, not worth the hassle”?

Really appreciate you sharing this, your caution feels very warranted, especially in high-stakes environments. That quote from the head scientist is intense... and honestly, I can understand why it struck a nerve.

You make a great point about the importance of integration, testing, and risk mitigation before rolling anything out. Have you come across any frameworks or processes that help teams validate AI systems more rigorously?

Also curious, are there any specific scenarios where you would feel more confident using AI, or is it more a case-by-case thing based on risk tolerance?

Thanks for the extra detail! it’s really interesting to hear your perspective. flux.ai seems like a great starting point, and it’s exciting that more companies are heading in that direction. If you do end up testing any of those tools, I’d be really curious to hear how they stack up in practice.

You also make a strong point about AI being in the wrong hands, the fake content issue is a real concern. It sounds like you’re thinking a lot about how to guide its use responsibly. Have you come across any teams, forums, or communities that are trying to do that well?

And that auto-correction example for C/C++ is a great use case, those small time-savers can really add up. Was that a tool you were testing, or something custom for a specific project?
