What drives you to be a working engineer?

Catwell

I have been accused of being driven by money. I've been told that it's a bad thing. Money is the root of all evil, they say. But I don't live lavishly, I buy mostly the bear minimum to live. It's like saying that the necessities of life are the root of all evil. I'd go out on a limb and say that almost everyone is driven by money, ultimately. Why else do get up in the morning, why do we do any go and design things, why else do we put in over time? Maybe I am wrong.  Should I live an altruistic bohemian lifestyle?

Why did Gates make basic or buy DOS? Why did Woz and Jobs start Apple? Why did Carmack write the engine for Commander Keen? It was a means to an end for each of them. They had a vision of where they wanted to be and did everything they could to get there. In these cases, it was highly profitable for them. Everyone I know, not just engineers, are struggling their ways to the goal of money.

Growing up, I was told to do what I like and the money will come. I was told recently that if I think of the money I will get from some venture, that it will fail for the lack of heart. Right now, I disagree. Don't we all pick the best option available and roll with it? The best option being the one that makes us the most money.

I have a few projects that I am poised to release to the public. One is an upgrade of a past semi-successful project, the other is a new idea in an unfamiliar area a gamble. Both of which I designed to make money.

How are you motivated?

    Hi Cabe,

I don't agree with those accepting money all the root of evil. If you eat foods as much as enough then it is good for your body and then for your healt, but if you eat more than necessary then it makes you disturb even causes you to die. So, earning money for a better life or trying to do any thing to get it is not evil until the things you do don't cause destructions on the others' lives. For example, you may do something which is not vital for your life but you do it to make money and then it causes someone else to loose his/her job. So you can state this is "Evil". So this is much about how much we choose none ethical way to accomplish what we inteded to do. There is no one in the world who will not desire to make much money for a better and then better life. The problem is the way we follow while earning money. Do we loose our humanity ? Do we behave none ethical ? Do we care about others ?

About your projects; It is vey vey normal to desire earning money for something you spended your valuable time and aimed to make money. For years, i shared all of my knowledge with others without expecting to make some money, but not anymore. Why not i try to make more money with the things i know ?
