Thankfully avoided that at my old job. The company had a policy in every office, world wide, desks must be clear when you are not there. Should that not happen you would have management on your back. This meant that all you could have on your desk is your computer and a single tray for every current document. For a team that mainly dealt with project management, this was interesting. The tray was always filled with old charts (Another policy to recycle everything you can) and the files of other team policy and current documents that would fit. It was a huge pain to have to spend half your day keeping everything organised so it wasn't recycled and the rest trying to work. Not fun at all. Thankfully I left before anything major was lost to the over enthusiastic cleaners and management.
A friend of mine has told be this happened to him on two occasions. One piece was the design of a machine part, which he had forgotten how it worked. This was a two day recovery situation. Losing this type of data is a major industry problem.
My main issue isn't the loss of drawings, but the fact they do not seem to be cleaning anyting else but my papers!
