Just the other day an engineering friend of mine said, “Next week my bosses are going to be gone. I’m going to use their [million dollar]machines to make some prototypes for myself.” Is this a common tendency?
A few times I thought about it. One company I worked for had a huge 3D printer, CNC machining centers, an enormous storehouse of electrical components. I always thought, if I just had a few days to use everything they had, I could make some serious products. Even so, I never partook in the misappropriation. I always think of the creators of Youtube, who build that site during their prior day jobs at Paypal. Using company resources to get it done.
We all could use a little technological push to make our difficult design dreams a reality. Do you use company resources for your own personal projects?
