How can you manage to damage a soldering iron like this?

cstanton

image

My first thought is, perhaps it's corrosion, from high or excess heat, these are disposable parts after all, but what really contributes to this kind of wear, and is there anything that can be done to prevent it being so sudden or so soon?

Often I find the soldering tips in the workstation to be bent, or the end of the tip looking like it's snapped off.

What're your thoughts?

How long do tips last for you or how often do you replace them?

What do you use to take care of your soldering iron?

I was going to say I've used the same tips for maybe 6+ years, but then I was reminded of 'Trigger's broom' : ) www.youtube.com/watch

That tip may have started out that short, they come in many different shapes and sizes. I have three different sizes I use: Short and fat = higher wattage. (usually) or someone has been cleaning the tip…

That looks like a tip from a Tenma hot air rework combination station (rebadged Atten). I would know ... because I have one, along with a spare soldering iron assembly when element14 last had it on special…

Pictures really tell a lot in a thread like this so here are my irons and a collection of old tips:

    image

The Aoyue is the iron part of my hot air rework station - I don't use the iron part much, because it isn't as good as the Hakko I use most of the time (I didn't bring the whole Hakko over for the picture).

The blue tip in the middle is the one I am currently using in the Hakko.

The Tenma is new, courtesy of element14 - only used in my camera area so far.

The Yong Feng looks unused because it is - I bought it for $12 - it might see some use for mobile work since the temperature control is in the handle, eliminating the big controller block.

Some of the tips have a worn spot that doesn't "wet" with solder well but I don't throw them out in case I want to use them for melting PLA or hot glue or some other application that would mess up a nice tip.

What is the strange tip with two bumps on the edges used for?

For fixings like this when you can't find the proper driver?

PS: I do know the real answer but will leave it to dougw as it is his soldering iron selection image

Looks like it would fit in the chuck of my electric drill OK which would reduce the stress of using it with the soldering iron for a handle  image

Ahhhh….the mystery tip.... To tell the truth, I don't recall why I bought that tip. I have a vague recollection that it was included in a bargain pack of tips where I was interested in the other tips.

(I didn't show my collection of spare tips that have not been used)

It might be good at removing SMT parts with that dimension, but I really don't know what it is was designed for.

It looks like I heated it up at least once, however it certainly hasn't been used much.

I sometimes buy bargain tips to see if they will work and fortunately I have a couple of metal sleeves that adapt various inner tip diameters to the heater diameter so they usually work okay.

That collection is all the tips I've used in the last 15 years. (except for my 2 older uncontrolled irons that served me for the previous 3 decades)

Weird tip! I'm going to guess at either some SMD passives, or surface-mount LEDs (e.g. for LED strip rework), or it could be for wood burning (i.e. craft stuff) for parallel lines, or for heat-sealing bags

I assumed it was for working with simple SMT devices, as shabaz and you have elluded to: most probably for desoldering such components.

Or in the hands of someone at cstanton makerspace...perhaps it could be converted to a standard tip in a few weeks image

You're correct. The notched tip is for desoldering passives. You can get different sized notches for different component sizes (0603, 0805, etc.) As an example, here's what Metcal offers for their MX-series irons: SMTC Series Slot new
